Hugh McKenna
Hugh McKenna is one of Long Island MMA's most experienced coaches, with nearly two decades as part of the team. A second-degree Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu black belt, retired professional MMA fighter, active professional grappler, and former college wrestler, Hugh brings a rare combination of technical knowledge, competitive experience, and advanced physical preparation to his coaching.
Nearly Two Decades of Competition, Coaching & Development
Hugh has been part of Long Island MMA for nearly 20 years, making him one of the longest-tenured members of the coaching team. Today he serves as one of the head MMA coaches while splitting his time between LIMMA's Long Island City and Babylon locations.
His background crosses several combat sports. Hugh competed professionally in MMA, wrestled at the college level, earned his second-degree Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu black belt, and remains active as a professional grappler.
That breadth gives Hugh a complete view of athlete development. He understands the technical demands of wrestling and grappling, the strategic and physical demands of MMA, and the strength, conditioning, and recovery work required to keep an athlete progressing over the long term.
Control the position, apply intelligent pressure, and make every movement efficient enough to keep working as the fight or match gets harder.
Intelligent Training. Technical Precision. Accountability.
Hugh's coaching combines high-level technique with modern training concepts. The objective is to develop athletes who are technically difficult to deal with, physically prepared, and capable of training consistently without relying on unnecessary wear and tear.
Control Before Chaos
Hugh's wrestling and grappling background emphasizes balance, position, pressure, and technical efficiency rather than wasting energy forcing movements that are not available.
Train for Transfer
Strength, conditioning, and technical work should make athletes better at martial arts. Training is built around qualities that transfer directly to grappling, striking, and MMA.
Build Durable Athletes
Hugh places a strong emphasis on physical preparation, movement quality, functional strength, and sustainable conditioning so athletes can continue training and progressing over time.
MMA, Grappling & Complete Physical Preparation
Hugh's experience across wrestling, Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu, professional MMA, grappling, and physical preparation allows him to develop athletes from multiple angles instead of treating technical skill and athletic preparation as separate problems.
Mixed Martial Arts
Develop the ability to connect striking, wrestling, grappling, positional control, conditioning, and tactical decision-making into a complete MMA game.
Explore the MMA Program →Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu & Grappling
Hugh's grappling is built around wrestling fundamentals, pressure, control, balance, and technical efficiency that translates directly to live competition.
Explore Grappling Classes →Strength & Conditioning
Physical preparation focuses on functional strength, durability, movement efficiency, grip strength, stability, coordination, and conditioning that supports combat sports rather than competing with technical training.
Explore circuit training classes →Technical Skill Is Only Part of the Equation
Hugh's approach looks at the complete athlete: technical ability, physical capacity, durability, conditioning, movement quality, and the ability to continue performing as intensity increases.
Serious Grapplers
Hugh helps grapplers develop more effective pressure, positional control, balance, pacing, and the physical qualities needed to make those skills work against experienced opponents.
MMA Athletes
His professional fighting and wrestling background provides a well-rounded perspective on connecting technical disciplines and maintaining performance throughout demanding training and competition.
Long-Term Athletes
Physical preparation is designed around sustainable progress—building strength, conditioning, tissue health, and durability without creating unnecessary fatigue that interferes with technical training.
Strength That Transfers to Combat Sports
Hugh's strength and conditioning philosophy is built around making athletes more resilient and more capable on the mats, rather than simply chasing bigger numbers in the weight room.
Functional Strength
Training develops strength that transfers to Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu, No-Gi grappling, striking, and MMA instead of emphasizing maximal lifts for their own sake.
Durability & Tissue Health
Programming emphasizes tendons, connective tissue, stability, movement quality, and physical resilience so athletes can tolerate consistent training.
Combat-Specific Athleticism
Rotational power, grip strength, coordination, stability, and movement efficiency are developed because they directly support performance in combat sports.
Nutrition-Informed Programming
Hugh's approach to physical preparation extends beyond training itself, incorporating nutrition knowledge that supports recovery, body composition, and long-term performance for competitors and recreational athletes alike.
