UFC 196 not only proved that Jiu Jitsu is one of the most effective martial arts and one of the most important martial arts to learn when studying MMA. Conor McGregor and Holly Holm both suffered there first loss inside the octagon Via RNC on Saturday march 5th. Nate Diaz was able to force Conor to take a shot after battering the Irishman on the feet and would sink in his submission in the second round of the UFC 196 bout. Miesha was also able to come out on top despite being an underdog, after 5 rounds of action with UFC women 135lb champion Miesha appeared to be down on the score cards. In the true spirit of Jiu Jitsu Miesha was able to score a take down and jump on Holly’s back, with only minutes left in the fight Miesha was able to choke Holly out unconscious. In both fights the rear naked choke was the method of victory and in both fight the fighters had a Jiu Jitsu base. This had us wondering at Long Island MMA what is the most effective submission in the UFC? We obviously suspected it was the RNC but we were surprised when we found out just how effective it is!
Out of all submission victories inside the octagon the rear naked choke made up nearly one third of them, that’s right out of the thousands of possible submissions about 1/3 of them were rear naked chokes, the arm-bar and the guillotine were in second and third place but it really wasn’t even close, combined the arm-bar and the guillotine barley beat the rear naked choke!
Long Island MMA is home to many fighters that have used the rear naked choke to secure victory, Long Island MMA’s Chris Wade was able to finish 2 of his professional fights by rear naked choke and one of them was even in the UFC. Long Island MMA’s head Brazilian Jiu Jitsu and MMA coach Gregg DePasqaule is known for his rear naked choked and it is one of the featured moves in this weeks curriculum.
